England will start their international dominance in 2012

England and Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan is convinced that that national squad will maintain its hold on world cricket in 2012 after finishing 2011 as the world's No 1 in both Tests and T20s. He says that despite a poor World Cup campaign and the 5-0 whitewash in the one-day series in India, England can still look back on the year with deep satisfaction.

"It's been an unbelievable year. To finish as No 1 in two out of three competitions shows we're in a good place - especially in Test cricket, which is the pinnacle.

The way we've played this year has been fantastic but we're still looking to improve and continue to churn out results," The Sun quoted Bresnan, as saying.

He added: "Winning the Ashes last winter was fantastic but to receive that giant mace after beating India at home and becoming the world's No 1 Test team was memorable. To see our hard work come to fruition was very satisfying. It was something we set our sights on a few years ago and we achieved our goal."

However, he said: "Staying at the top might be more difficult than getting there. The way the rankings work means we have to keep winning not just games but also series.

It will be a big challenge to defend our No 1 status against Pakistan in the Emirates early next year.
